John Logan's Tony Award-winning play, Red, is an intense two-person drama set in the late 1950s. It follows legendary abstract expreionist painter Mark Rothko and his fictional assistant, Ken, as they debate the nature of art, commercialism, and generational legacy while working on a massive mural commission.
REVIEWS:
The Utah Review: “For one of the most intellectually challenging and engaging independent theatrical productions of the year, this rendering of Red by Sackerson and Lil Poppet Productions is highly recommended.” Full Review
Rachel Reviews: “…being in an artistic space grounds the story and helps make it easy to be engrossed in the world of fine art and painting. After all, it’s about the artist Mark Rothko and his famous painting Red and we actually get to see the actors painting a canvas red much like Rothko might have done.” Full Review
Rhetorical Review: “In the end, RED is not simply about painting—it is about power. It asks: Who defines meaning? Who controls legacy? And what happens when that control is challenged?
Ken’s final assertion does not dismantle Rothko—it forces him to recognize what he has long resisted: that meaning cannot be fully controlled, and that creation does not belong to one voice alone. The question lingers: Who truly defines great art—the artist, the audience, or the dialogue between them? This production does not answer it—and that is precisely its strength.” Full Review
